Still Got Ceramic Fuses? Why Old Perth Fuse Boards Are a Problem

How to tell if your home still has ceramic fuses, why they're a safety and insurance problem, and what a modern switchboard gives you instead.

Still Got Ceramic Fuses? Why Old Perth Fuse Boards Are a Problem

In short: ceramic fuses are the porcelain fuse holders with a strip of wire inside that you find in switchboards built before the late 1980s. They give you no safety switch protection, they were built for a fraction of what a modern home draws, and older boards can have asbestos backing. If your board still has them, replacing it is a safety job, not a cosmetic one.

Ceramic fuses are still sitting in switchboards all over Perth, particularly in the 1960s to 80s homes in suburbs like Balcatta, Osborne Park, Karrinyup, Carine and Scarborough. If you've never looked closely at your switchboard, it's worth five minutes.

How to tell if you have ceramic fuses

Open the switchboard door and look at what's inside:

  • Ceramic fuses look like chunky porcelain plugs, often white or cream, that pull out of the board. Inside is a thin strip of fuse wire.
  • Circuit breakers are the small switches with a lever that flicks up or down.
  • Safety switches (RCDs) look like breakers but have a small "test" button on them.

If you see porcelain plugs and no test buttons anywhere, you have a ceramic fuse board with no safety switch protection. If you see a mix, someone has partially updated it, which is common and still worth having checked.

Why ceramic fuses are a problem

No protection against electric shock. A fuse protects the wiring from overload. It does nothing to protect a person. A safety switch cuts power in milliseconds when current leaks to earth. Ceramic fuse boards don't have one, so a faulty appliance or a damaged cable can deliver a fatal shock with nothing to stop it.

They were built for a different house. A 1970s home ran a fridge, a TV and a few lights. The same home now runs split system air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a dishwasher, a dryer, maybe a pool pump and an EV charger. Old boards run hot and fuse wire gets replaced with whatever's in the drawer.

The wrong fuse wire is common and dangerous. When a fuse blows, people rewire it with thicker wire so it stops blowing. That removes the only protection the circuit had. We see this in a large share of the old boards we open.

Asbestos backing. Many switchboards installed before the mid 1980s used asbestos-containing panels behind the fuses. It's safe if undisturbed, but it means the board should only be worked on by someone who knows what they're handling.

Selling or renting. In Western Australia, a home needs at least two safety switches fitted before it can be sold or rented. A ceramic fuse board won't pass. We've covered the exact rules in our post on RCD requirements in WA.

What replacing it involves

A switchboard upgrade replaces the whole board, not just the fuses. The old board comes out, a new enclosure goes in with circuit breakers on every circuit and safety switches covering them, every circuit gets labelled, and the installation is tested and certified to the current wiring rules.

On most Perth homes the job takes between 4 and 10 hours depending on the size and condition of the board. Power is off for part of that time. We've written up what it costs in our switchboard upgrade cost guide, and the Switchboard Upgrade Perth service page covers what's included.

Do you need to do it right now?

If the board has ceramic fuses and no safety switches, yes. That's not a sales line, it's the single highest-risk thing in the house.

If you've got a mixed board with some breakers and one older safety switch, it's less urgent but still worth a proper look, because a single RCD covering the whole house is a common cause of nuisance tripping and doesn't meet current standards for new work.
