In short: LED downlight installation in Perth is priced per light, with the cost dropping the more you do in one visit. A standard room usually needs four to six, spaced around 1 to 1.5 metres apart and kept away from the walls. The things that matter most are IC-rated fittings if you have ceiling insulation, a dimmer that's actually compatible with LEDs, and a licensed electrician doing the work.
LED downlight installation is one of the most common jobs we do across Perth, either replacing old halogens or lighting a renovation properly. It's also one where a cheap job shows up fast, in flickering, dead spots and fittings that overheat in the ceiling.
There are two parts to the price: the fitting itself and the labour to install it. The labour drops per light when several are done at once, because the electrician is already in the roof.
What pushes the price up: a tight or low roof space, a two-storey home where the ceiling is under a floor, adding dimmers, and anything that needs the switchboard touched. We quote a fixed price before we start, so there's no per-hour surprise.
If you still have halogens, the running cost difference alone usually pays for the swap. We've broken that down in our post on LED vs halogen lighting savings.
Rough guide, based on what works in most Perth homes:
Brightness is in lumens, not watts. For general living areas, around 800 to 1000 lumens per fitting is comfortable. Colour temperature is the warm-or-cool look: 3000K is warm white and suits living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K is cooler and suits kitchens, laundries and garages.
Are the fittings IC-rated? IC stands for insulation contact. Perth ceilings are mostly insulated, and a downlight that isn't IC-rated has to have insulation cleared around it, which leaves a cold spot and, in the worst case, a fire risk. IC-rated fittings can be covered by insulation safely.
Will the dimmer work with LEDs? Old halogen dimmers often don't. They cause flicker, buzzing and early failure. LEDs need a compatible dimmer, usually a trailing edge type, and the downlight itself has to be a dimmable model. If your new LEDs flicker, that's the first thing we check. More on that in why are my lights flickering.
Is the installer licensed? In WA, any work on the fixed wiring, including a new downlight circuit, must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. Plug-in lamps are fine to DIY. Anything in the ceiling is not.
We mark out the positions with you first, so the lights line up with the room and not just with where the joists happen to be. Then holes are cut, cabling run, fittings connected and tested, and old halogen transformers removed rather than left in the roof. A room of downlights is usually done in a few hours.
