In short: in Perth, a new indoor power point from Nexus Electrical Co is $286 inc GST and a weatherproof outdoor power point is $330 inc GST. Swapping an old single power point for a double, or for one with USB outlets, is usually quicker than adding a new one because the cable is already there. The things that push the price up are a long cable run, a solid brick wall, and an old switchboard with no room for a new circuit.
Power point installation is one of the most common small jobs we do, and it's also one where the price can surprise people if nobody explains what's involved. Here's what you're paying for.
Every job is a fixed price before we start, so the number you're quoted is the number you pay.
Swapping a single for a double. If you've got a single power point and you're running a powerboard off it, a double is the cheaper and safer fix. The cable is already in the wall, so it's mostly a matter of fitting the new outlet and testing it.
USB power points. Same idea. A double power point with USB-A or USB-C outlets built in replaces the existing one in the same spot. Handy beside the bed, in the kitchen and in the study.
A brand new power point. This is where the time goes. The cable has to be run from an existing circuit or from the switchboard to the new spot, through the roof space or under the floor, and down inside the wall.
Outdoor power points are popular for the patio, the barbecue area, a pool pump or a pond pump, and for anyone thinking about an EV charger down the track. A weatherproof outlet with a proper cover is the only kind that should go outside. A standard indoor power point in a spot that gets rain or reticulation is a safety risk, and an extension lead run out a window isn't much better.
If you've got a list (a double power point here, an outdoor point there, a light that needs replacing), do it all in one booking. It's much cheaper than separate call-outs. We've explained how much an electrician costs in Perth, including when a call-out fee applies and when a fixed price does.
No. In WA, any work on the fixed wiring, including replacing a power point, has to be done by a licensed electrician. It's not worth the risk, and it can cause problems with your insurance if something goes wrong.
